Overview

The Basics (thebasics.org) mission is to pursue both equity and excellence, by building community capacity to engage and support parents and other caregivers of young children in their roles as the most important influences in their children's lives. The Basics is a community-level public health strategy, working within and across organizations to embed The Basics Principles–five evidence-based practices for promoting early childhood development–into routine family engagement efforts.

 

The Basics Boston is a member of a national Basics Learning Network of communities, led by The Basics, Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Boston, where the movement began. The Basics is a fiscally sponsored organization of TSNE (tsne.org). 

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

Strategic Marketing and Communications

  • Develop, implement, and manage social marketing to promote our organization’s mission and vision.
  • Propose and implement communication and marketing strategies to achieve organizational goals and objectives. This includes collaboration with the CEO and senior staff as well as stakeholders.
  • Review and manage existing web and social media output to ensure consistency and maximize impact across all platforms.
  • Manage and review content on the organization’s public-facing website, update with fresh content on a regular basis.
  • Collaborate with Learning and Innovation staff to design and implement communications strategies around existing and newly created content, to maximize appeal and visibility among diverse audiences.
  • Monitor and manage local outreach efforts, propose and oversee implementation plans to increase visibility of The Basics in key Boston-area neighborhoods.
  • Work with the CEO and other senior staff to write e-newsletters.
  • Inform and support the creation of graphic design and production of The Basics materials.
  • Prepare and disseminate regular social media content across a range of platforms (including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram).
  • Assist with press outreach, including helping to craft op-ed pieces for local newspapers and the creation of press kits and materials.
  • Perform other occasional duties as required.

Events, Conferences, and Other Gatherings

  • Plan and coordinate Boston-area events to maximize engagement and subsequent follow-up.
  • Support the coordinators of the annual BLN conference by helping to broadcast and report on its activities and outcomes.  
  • Occasionally represent The Basics at events.
  • Build ongoing collaborative relationships to facilitate communication and promotion of The Basics’ mission and strategy.

Ongoing Fund-Raising and End-of-Year Donor Campaigns

  • Assist with planning and implementation of ongoing fundraisers and end-of-year annual appeals.
  • Provide input on the production and dissemination of end-of-year reports, newsletters, presentations, website content or other public-facing materials.

Analytics and Assessment

  • Help ensure that adequate systems are in place to assess the impact and scope of marketing and communication efforts and regularly report progress to the CEO and other senior staff.
  • Monitor online trends and activities that relate to the mission of The Basics and help generate strategies, partnerships, or other engagement activities to enhance its public representation and presence.
  • Track, measure and report effectiveness of communications and marketing programs.

Qualifications

We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

  • Professional experience (5 plus years) in marketing and communications, social and web media outreach and management, as well as public relations strategies, preferably for a nonprofit.
  • College undergraduate degree, preferably in marketing or communications or several years of experience in comparable role(s) required.
  • Preference given to applicants with a background in family engagement.
  • Excellent writing and grammar skills and general communications abilities written and verbal are required
  • Demonstrated ability to create compelling marketing materials to reach diverse audiences.
  • Familiarity with Google analytics and other metrics for monitoring web and social media impacts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and inspire a diverse group of volunteers in support of The Basics.
  • Ability to work autonomously while maintaining supportive and collaborative relationships with colleagues. Strong organizational and time management skills are imperative requirements.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office required and familiarity with Adobe suite of products and other design and communications software is a plus.
  • Flexibility, responsibility, and compassion are key qualities of the ideal candidate.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to:

Compensation and Benefits

 

Location: Work will be primarily performed onsite, Boston, Massachusetts, with some hybrid flexibility. 

Compensation: The salary range for this position is $35,435 - $45,539/yr. and is commensurate with experience.

Schedule: Monday-Friday; 18.75 hours per week.
