We learn by listening to groups and leaders about what it takes for organizations to align their social justice principles with their operating practices. Our research and practical resources help organizations innovate to meet the needs of the communities they serve and face the challenges of the external environment.


BMP concentrates on the following three main areas to accomplish our goals and advance social change:

  • Leadership: Analyzing how organizations can do their best work, encourage diverse leaders at every level, and promote the most effective and inclusive practices;
  • Organizational Change: Developing the capacity of organizations to both engage constituents in addressing systems barriers that impact their lives and make nonprofit workplaces more equitable and inclusive;
  • Movement Building: Acknowledging and building on the distinct role of organizations and networks in advancing movements for social change.

 The Building Movement Project is fiscally sponsored by TSNE ( and based in New York City.



We are seeking a full-time Senior Director of Institutional Advancement who will be laser focused on the fundraising duties for the organization (60% of role focused on fundraising), and ensuring that BMP is financially stable, operationally sound, and effectively communicating about the organization’s work and impacts. As part of the Senior Leadership team, the Senior Director of Institutional Advancement will work closely with BMP’s Co-Executive Directors, participate in cross-organizational planning and decision-making, and help manage and grow a high impact, equitable and just organization, where staff across all identities are supported and thrive. They will also directly supervise a staff team working on communications, finance, operations, and interact frequently with staff of BMP’s fiscal sponsor (for more about TSNE’s services see here).


Responsibilities of the Senior Director of Institutional Advancement will include:

  • In partnership with the Co-Executive Directors and other senior staff, lead Building Movement Project’s strategic fundraising efforts, to include:
    • Develop and implement fundraising strategies and plans
    • Identify funder prospects
    • Draft grant proposals, budgets and reports
    • Steward existing and new funders
    • Develop and organize funder events, briefings and materials
    • Develop and oversee the organization’s strategy for growth, including financial forecasting and anticipating staffing needs

  • Oversee Building Movement Project’s finance and operations, to include:
    • Directly supervise the Finance, Grants and Operations Senior Manager, who supervises the part-time Finance and Administration Associate
    • In coordination with BMP’s Finance, Grants and Operations Senior Manager, ensure that BMP is in compliance with our fiscal sponsor’s finance, legal and HR systems to include: financial reporting, grants management, contract approvals, talent recruitment, hiring, onboarding and performance assessments.
    • In coordination with BMP’s Finance, Grants and Operations Senior Manager and BMP’s fiscal sponsor, oversee all organizational operations including, securing and managing needed technology and software, processing and executing contracts.

  • Oversee Building Movement Project’s communications, to include:
    • Directly supervise the Communications and Operations Associate
    • In coordination with BMP’s Communications and Operations Associate, manage the organization’s contact database, regular newsletters and blogs, and supporting webinars and other communication vehicles

  • Participate on the Senior Leadership Team, engaging in cross-organizational planning, oversight and decision-making.

  • Work collaboratively across projects with Building Movement Project staff, team members, consultants and fiscal sponsor.

  • Other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience: 

  • Extensive Nonprofit Fundraising Skills and Experience. You have experience developing and implementing fundraising strategies and plans for nonprofit organizations. You have a track record of identifying and cultivating funder prospects and managing all aspects of fundraising, from making pitches and drafting proposals, to submitting grant reports and requesting renewals. You are comfortable with the administrative tasks associated with fundraising and have excellent organizational systems. 
  • Experience Overseeing Nonprofit Infrastructure and Operations. You have deep familiarity with and experience overseeing nonprofit infrastructure and operations. You are familiar with nonprofit accounting and financial reporting procedures, as well as contracting and payroll requirements. You have experience overseeing talent management systems and policies, and a general understanding of human resources legal regulations, procedures and best practices. You have strong technology skills and prior experience with Microsoft Office Suite and organizational databases. 
  • Cross-Organizational Management Experience and Skills. You have experience thinking and managing across the whole of an organization. You have effectively managed your own portfolio and team while also addressing and leading around cross-organizational issues. You are able to meaningfully contribute to cross-organizational discussions at the most senior levels of an organization and make decisions that contribute to the overall well being of an organization.  
  • Track record of effective staff and team management. You have a high level of comfort leading and developing staff and teams. You have a track record of implementing systems and practices that support and develop staff, cohere teams, advance equity and fulfill organizational goals. You bring a collaborative style to staff and team leadership and can effectively identify and leverage staff strengths and identify and develop coaching and mentoring plans around areas for growth. 
  • Excellent Communication, Relationship-Building and Partnership Skills. You have excellent verbal and written communication skills. You can authentically connect with colleagues, build lasting relationships and work effectively across difference. You listen deeply, value the insights from people’s lived experience, and have a high level of emotional intelligence. You have experience building respectful and productive long-term partnerships and can effectively navigate interpersonal and group power dynamics. You have a track record of navigating conflict with integrity, thought and care. 
  • Advanced equity analysis and practice with a clear analysis of how racism and other forms of oppression impact relationships, systems and culture, and a track record of working and collaborating effectively in a multiracial, intergenerational workplace and sector.

The most successful candidates will also demonstrate the following skills and experience: 

  • Experience working with fiscal sponsors.
  • Experience developing and overseeing organizational communications, including newsletters and blogs.

Compensation and Benefits


Location: Work will be primarily performed remotely from your home office anywhere in the United States.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position is $140,000 -  $165,000 / year and is commensurate with experience.
