Overview

Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition (MFFC)(mattapanfoodandfit.org) grew out of an effort to draw on the wonderful ethnic and cultural diversity of the Mattapan community to promote a healthy living environment, with a focus on access to healthy foods and the promotion of physical fitness for all ages. Positive changes in these areas complement other efforts to decrease health problems like diabetes, heart disease, obesity and other health conditions that plague our community. MFFC is a fiscally sponsored organization of TSNE (tsne.org).

 

Mission Statement: To promote health and healthy behaviors by improving the nutritional and physical activity environments for Mattapan residents and residents of surrounding communities.

 

Responsibilities

The Development Director will be a part of an exciting, growing non-profit organization and help MFFC with finance, development, programs, and overall sustainability. They will work to create structure and streamline MFFC’s processes and continue building on our fundraising efforts. The Development Director will thrive on fostering relationships with funders, partners, and advisory members, and most importantly the residents of Mattapan.  Will be responsible for building and maintaining various fundraising systems and tools; writing and producing content related to development for distribution; assisting in the creation and implementation of the organizational budget, overall program management and develop processes to grow the organization, and have a passion for inspiring generosity for the betterment of improving the health of Mattapan residents. Sets the organization’s development strategy and implementation, which includes grants, individual donors, events and corporate sponsorship revenue streams. Serves on the admin team with the Executive Director.

 

Development

  • Develop long term plan to further grow and diversify the organization’s revenue streams over the next 2-3 years
    • Assess and evaluate existing fundraising efforts.
    • Individual donors: Research, suggest a database solution for managing MFFC’s individual donations and use the database to keep track of individual donations. Leads individual campaign and appeal strategy. Oversees the growth of our individual donor base administratively through donation processing, communications for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Oversees a strong and consistent acknowledgement system to ensure donors are recognized in a timely manner for their support, and ongoing strategic engagement. Maintain the database.
    • Major gifts: Strengthens the organization’s major gifts program, and serves as a relationship manager for this growing donor base. Leverages the Executive Director as needed for communications and strategy efforts.
    • Grants: Work with MFFC and/or related partners to write and oversee the timely submission of grant proposals, LOIs, reports, and related materials as appropriate. Make necessary proposal revisions based on feedback, and schedule requested funder interviews in coordination with the executive director, staff, or occasionally the advisory board.
    • Funders: Cultivate and manage relationships with funder contacts and new funder prospects, including email, one-on-one conversations, attending occasional donor meetings, and etc.
    • Corporate sponsorships: Create and oversees corporate sponsorship strategy and logistics. Serves as primary liaison with corporate partners.
    • Events + Sponsorships: Leads the strategy and implementation of fundraising event planning, with support from the Executive Director. Collaborates with staff and advisory board members on fundraising activities that happen in conjunction with external events.
  • Lead in the maintenance of MFFC marketing and communications materials, which includes our branding guide, our website, social media pages, and constant contact.
  • Maintain content and data for all development materials and event materials including direct mail appeal, campaign-specific and project-specific solicitation materials with the Marketing and Communications Coordinator/Intern.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and TSNE contact in setting annual revenue goals, providing regular revenue projection data and ensuring accurate reporting of income.
  • Collaborate with staff, advisory board, volunteers, or students regarding the organization’s external communications, impact reporting and storytelling efforts.
  • Attends external functions and represents the organization externally.
  • Partner with the organization’s Advisory Board and Executive Director to support their fundraising efforts. Guide and engage current and prior Board members in meaningful development opportunities and cultivate individual donor relationships.
  • Supervise development contractors/consultants, interns, and volunteers as necessary.

Membership

  • Lead and implement the strategic development of MFFC’s membership and volunteer programs.
    • Create an innovative membership program that aligns with the needs and interests of Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition and engages current volunteers to assess, inform and design the program. This includes developing marketing content, a recruitment, registration, and onboarding process, exploring and finalizing membership benefits.
    • Assess existing volunteer tools and lead in implementation to streamline volunteer placement.
    • Support program staff and advisory board members in recruiting volunteers for MFFC related events.
    • Work with Marketing and Communications Intern to create marketing tools.
  • Create membership/volunteer opportunities geared towards relationship building between members, volunteers, and Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition.
  • Develop and implement procedures to engage and steward members and volunteers by organizing membership events in the community and during MFFC related events.
  • Create and deliver communication materials for members and volunteers including print, electronic and high quality audio material.
  • Create and maintain member and volunteer records.
  • Uploading of new, segmented email addresses into Constant Contact and maintenance of Constant Contact.

 

Organizational Development - Finance & Fiscal Management 

  • Provide vision, strategic guidance, and direction for the organization in collaboration with the Executive Director.
  • Develop understanding of MFFC’s programs, activities, and goals, and successfully communicate them both verbally and in writing.
  • Supervise related interns: marketing, communication, development, evaluation.
  • Work with the Executive Director on MFFC evaluation needs.
  • Lead MFFC’s development and membership/volunteer programs.
  • Attend MFFC monthly meetings and other community based meetings.
  • Represent MFFC at meetings and on councils/boards related to the organization’s mission.
  • Develop organizational budget with Executive Director and MFFC staff.
  • Attend MFFC’s Fundraising Committee and advisory board meetings to report on financials.
  • Create and tailor financial reports into formats requested by funders and the organization.
  • Attend monthly finance meetings with the Executive Director and the Grants and Finance Manager at TSNE.
  • Assist with monthly and annual revenue projections with the Executive Director and Grants and Finance Manager at TSNE.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of nonprofit fundraising/development experience and management and supervising individuals.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence with diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic groups and understanding of the role social determinants, including racism, play in its impact on health outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and steward new and existing donors and funders, as well as a proven commitment to relationship-focused fundraising principles.
  • Proven success track record in conducting research on grant opportunities and submissions.
  • Proven project management, leadership experience, and ability to work independently.
  • Strong partnership-building and event planning skills.
  • Strong verbal/written and public communication skills, including experience engaging community, funders, and internally with staff and advisory board members.
  • A general understanding of marketing, promotion, branding, and communications strategies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; Google Suite, Canva, Wix, open to learning new systems once adopted, and knowledge of database management and financial software.
  • Willingness to work some evening and weekends as needed.
  • Open and flexible to the changes that come with a growing organization.
  • Comfortable working in a virtual environment.

Compensation and Benefits

 

Location: Work will be primarily performed Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition,1613 Blue Hill Ave, Suite 307, Mattapan, MA 02126. Hybrid - 37.5 hours/week may include some evenings and weekends.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position is $57,000/year and is commensurate with experience.
