Gardening the Community ( is a BIPOC-led urban agriculture organization engaged in youth development and advancing racial justice to build healthy and equitable communities. We work with youth to grow food on reclaimed abandoned lots in the Mason Square community of Springfield. We partner with the Springfield Food Policy Council on advocacy campaigns for increased access to healthy food and greater food security for historically marginalized residents. The impact of our work is far beyond growing vegetables. GTC contributes to the local and statewide food and racial justice movements that seek to change the root causes of the poor health and unjust food systems facing communities (especially low-income communities and communities of color) across the State. We are creating locally controlled food resources that support our young people, build community and offer sustainable alternatives to Springfield families.

This role helps to lead and coordinate the day-to-day Food Access, including the Farm Store operations, including scheduling staff and monitoring inventory according to planning and financial goal setting.  This position also coordinates and promotes GTC’s efforts to educate the community about the farm store, our CSA (GTC EATS) and the public benefit for SNAP recipients, HIP. This position is the front-line contact for relationships with clients, vendors and works with the youth program staff to support youth participants.


Daily Operations: 

  • Responsible for the daily operations of the Farm Store and GTC’s farmers markets this role is focused on creating a welcoming, clean, and abundant shopping environment for GTC customers.
  • Staff 3-4 farm stand shifts per week during the fall and winter months.
  • Oversee the opening and closing of the farm stand (including financial and product record keeping); ensure register close out sheets/receipts and inventory paperwork is in order for the Finance Associate.
  • Ensure produce is properly stored at closing and valuables are stored safely in dry storage area.
  • Oversee marketing, enrollment and distribution of GTC EATS! Farm shares.

 Farm Store Ordering and Management

  • Oversee and execute farm stand goals and budget set by the Executive Director.
  • Determine pricing within guidelines set by Executive Director, update pricing on a weekly/daily basis as needed; Role model good leadership, customer service, safe food handling, and work ethic for staff, youth and volunteers.
  • Assist with the development of vendor/partner standards.
  • Develop a diverse list of products, place orders, maintain inventory, manage expiration dates, and help to determine store merchandising layout.
    • Develop and place product orders for Farm Store, including EATS!, GTC grown produce and Costco orders.
    • Maintain and contribute to the upgrades of GTC’s inventory tracking system.
    • Work with the executive director to source vendors to get new local products.
  • Work with the Executive Director and GTC Farm staff team to identify the ideal crop mix for distribution through the Farm Store and EATS!
  • Perform and supervise general store maintenance (including bathroom); refer issues concerning major repairs or other issues to Executive Director.
  • Serve on Farm Store Leadership Team including planning for the Farm Stand’s sustainability, growth, marketing, and staffing.

 Manage Farm Store and Farmers Market Associates

  • Supervise Farm Store Associates and Farmers Markets Associates.
  • Train GTC staff in Farm Store and Farmers Market Procedures.
  • Assist with managing the daily participation and involvement of GTC youth at the farm stand and in general, helping to build their leadership abilities and capacity. 

 Farm Stand Promotion and Food Education

  • Lead/design farm store and Community Share of Agriculture (CSA) marketing strategy.
  • Develop and update pricing signage and ensure that educational materials about farms, farm stand/GTC values, etc are developed and posted at the farm stand
  • Organizes tastings and cooking demonstrations.
  • Contribute to the monthly e-newsletter, social media and website content regularly.

 General Duties

  • Assist with other organizational activities including fundraising, events, and office management as requested.
  • Attend all GTC Staff and team meetings as well as Board Meetings upon request.
  • Drive GTC refrigerated truck and passenger van.
  • Completion of Undoing Racism Workshop (required upon hire).



We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

  • One year management experience at a retail or produce store or the equivalent of 2 years retail experience.
  • One year experience supervising staff including scheduling shifts and performance management.
  • Ability to relate easily to middle and high school aged youth and to support their growth and development as leaders;
  • Understanding of issues relating to racial equity, food and health equity, food access, local food, and sustainable agriculture.
  • Commitment to food justice, increasing food access issues and identifying solutions.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and drive and experience with marketing, community outreach and engagement.
  • Completion of Undoing Racism Workshop (required upon hire).
  • Working experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel.
  • Experience assisting staff with new youth, interns, and volunteers in a farm or garden setting. 
  • Experience leading groups (large or small).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to drive large vehicles in the city.
  • Successful Driver’s License Check.
  • Successful Background/CORI Check.

  • Likelihood of personal injury would be relatively slight;
  • Environmental and work hazards are not present to a measurable degree.

Compensation and Benefits


Location: Work will be primarily performed at Gardening the Community in Springfield, MA.

Schedule: This role requires the ability to work occasional mornings, nights and weekends.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position is $39,000 yr and is commensurate with experience.
