Massachusetts Farm to School was founded in 2004 as a grassroots initiative to increase access to healthy, locally-grown food in schools and other institutions across the state. Our mission is to strengthen local farms and fisheries and promote healthy communities by increasing local food purchasing and education at schools. We believe that all students - regardless of race, place, or class - deserve access to local foods and food education in school.

Massachusetts Farm to School works in the following ways to impact local food procurement, promotion, and education in institutions across the state. 1) We provide training and technical assistance to school food service professionals, farmers and fishermen, distributors, educators, and other advocates; 2) We coordinate local food outreach and promotion through our Harvest of the Month campaign; 3) We facilitate networking of farm to school practitioners; and 4) We provide leadership to advance policies that support expanded farm to school activity. Massachusetts Farm to School is seeking a Communications Assistant to help drive the mission of the organization by providing support to the Communications Director in efforts to increase awareness about the importance of farm to school within the broader food system. The Communications Assistant will help the Director engage a wide variety of stakeholders through social media, email marketing, events outreach, press outreach, and database management.


The successful candidate will have strong writing skills, a demonstrated interest in social media management, both from a written & graphic standpoint. They should be a self-starter with the ability to work both independently and as a core member of an all-remote team. They should have the ability to toggle between multiple projects. This position is ideal for an early career individual who is social media savvy and looking to gain additional experience in non-profit communications.  


While the majority of the work will be completed remotely, we are seeking Massachusetts based candidates to enable occasional in-person meetings following public health guidance.

Essential Job Functions

Administrative Support

  • Provide administrative support to the Communications Director, including database management;
  • Assist in distribution of press and promotional materials and maintain records of distribution;
  • Manage invoices for our Harvest of the Month program;
  • Maintain general email account - responding and/or forwarding email to appropriate staff members.


  • Social Media: post drafting, creating graphics, engaging with followers, monitoring farm to school related accounts;
  • Promotional Materials: updating fact & info sheets, using design templates to create educational resources;
  • Email Marketing: supporting the Communications Director in email outreach efforts;
  • Website: updating pages and adding resources where required.


We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

  • Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Massachusetts Farm to School;
  • Interest in agriculture, nutrition education, and/or school food;
  • At least 1 year of work or volunteer experience in a non-profit or other professional setting;
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with program staff;
  • Experience with social media, knowledgeable about the latest platforms with a vision for how to maximize social media presence;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides);
  • Preferred – experience with WordPress; Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign & Photoshop); iMovie or other video editing software; database software; Mailchimp;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds who help to drive our mission;
  • High attention to detail. 

Special Requirements: This position is based remotely within Massachusetts and requires reliable internet and phone connection. 

Physical Demands/Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to:

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate;

Regarding COVID-19: TSNE considers the health and safety of our employees of the utmost importance, and due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and subject to your state and local laws, our policy requires that all employees performing in-person work at a TSNE designated office are fully vaccinated. For the purpose of this policy, fully vaccinated indicates that you have received a single dose of the Janssen vaccine, or both doses of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. Compensation and Benefits


Location: Work will be primarily performed remotely. This position is a part time, temporary position at 15 hours per week for approximately 10 months. We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis and encourage you to apply as soon as possible with a preferred start date in early September. 

Compensation: The hourly rate for this position is $25.00

Benefits: This position is not eligible for benefits.
