First Teacher’s central goal is to help rebuild a network of parents/caregivers in Roxbury and Dorchester working together to prepare their children to be school- and world-ready. Our secondary goal is to increase school readiness in all children. First Teacher views parents as experts, transformative agents of change, and an untapped resource in our city. We believe in the collective power of parents/caregivers to change the trajectory of their own lives and their children’s lives, and to define the fate of our city. Ours is a story of the regenerative power of re-connecting.


First Teacher is a fiscally sponsored organization of TSNE. (



First Teacher Parent Leaders serve as the collective leadership of the movement. The primary responsibility of the role is to work collaboratively with other major First Teacher stakeholders to bring the mission of First Teacher to life by developing programming, building connections, and helping parents/caregivers to recognize the power they hold as their child’s first and most important teacher. Parent Leaders also play a key role in strategic planning for the future of the movement.

Collective Leadership and Communication

  • Participate in First Teacher planning meetings including monthly Parent Leader meetings, monthly Professional Development meetings, annual retreat, and other professional development and leadership meetings as required.
  • Join one non-programming staff team (Ex: Budget, Finance, and Fundraising; Data and Reflection, etc.).
  • Take responsibility for maintaining a positive environment in the First Teacher office by helping to keep the office organized and by communicating when supplies are needed.
  • Communicate with the PL team between PL meetings by responding to and/or initiating text messages, emails, etc.
  • Embrace public speaking opportunities (with support).


  • Lead and/or support First Teacher programming 2-4 times per month such as workshops, playdates, childcare, book clubs, Parent Virtual Commiseration Parties or additional programming.
  • Lead and/or support community events such as fun fairs, community connectors, etc.
  • Work with other staff members to design program curriculum for both adults and children.


Community Building

  • Support colleagues by mentoring, shadowing, substituting, volunteering and/or assisting in various capacities.
  • Seek to build community by creating relationships with other Parent Leaders, First Teacher families, and other First Teacher stakeholders and to connect members of the FT community with each other.
  • Represent First Teacher in our communities by sharing information about programming, events, etc.


  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Special Requirements

  • This role requires ability to work evenings and weekends.


We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

  • First Teacher participant for a minimum of 1 year.
  • Bilingual (Spanish and English): Ability to speak, write, and translate between English and Spanish.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to participate for Summer Retreat: July 30th, 9 AM-3:30 PM and August 1st, 4-7 PM.
  • Ability to meet local travel needs to a variety of off-site locations.
  • Reliable access to technologyA demonstrated commitment to the core values, norms and mission of First Teacher.
  • Strong desire for personal and professional growth and a commitment to participating in on-going professional development.
  • A demonstrated curiosity about child development and education.
  • Willingness to give and receive constructive feedback with colleagues.
  • Willingness to take initiative for new projects/programs (with support).
  • A commitment to effectively growing First Teacher’s capacity internally and externally.
  • Working knowledge of Google, Zoom, and other key online platforms and applications.
  • Successful CORI/SORI background check.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to:

  • Talk, hear and see in the normal range with or without correction.
  • Use hands or fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. 
  • Move, Traverse; sit (usually for longer periods of time); reach with hands and arms; occasionally Ascend/Descend; and position self (to), move. 
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Job is not subject to significant occupational or environmental hazards. 
  • Likelihood of personal injury would be relatively slight. 
  • Environmental and work hazards are not present to a measurable degree.

Regarding COVID-19: TSNE considers the health and safety of our employees of the utmost importance, and due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and subject to your state and local laws, our policy requires that all employees performing in-person work at a TSNE designated office are fully vaccinated. For the purpose of this policy, fully vaccinated indicates that you have received a single dose of the Janssen vaccine, or both doses of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. Certain exemptions may be requested and will be considered by Human Resources.


Compensation and Benefits


Location: Work will be primarily performed at First Teacher 221 Blue Hill Ave. Roxbury MA 02119.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position is $20.00/hr.

Benefits: This position is not eligible for benefits.
