Overview

For nearly two decades, the Building Movement Project (BMP) (buildingmovement.org) has cultivated the potential for nonprofit organizations to effectively partner with movements for progressive social change. We learn by listening to groups and leaders about what it takes for organizations to align their social justice principles with their operating practices. Our research and practical resources help organizations innovate to meet the needs of the communities they serve and face the challenges of the external environment.

 

BMP concentrates on the following three main areas to accomplish our goals and advance social change:

  • Leadership: Analyzing how organizations can do their best work, encourage diverse leaders at every level, and promote the most effective and inclusive practices;
  • Movement Building: Acknowledging and building on the distinct role of nonprofit organizations in advancing movements for social change;
  • Service and Social Change: Developing the capacity of organizations to engage constituents in changing the systems that impact their lives.

 The Building Movement Project is a fiscally sponsored project of TSNE (tsne.org). 

Responsibilities

The Building Movement Project (BMP) is seeking a full-time Associate to advance BMP’s communications work – with a particular focus on generating content that amplifies BMP’s resources and increases the organization’s visibility and following – and support the smooth operation and administrative needs of the organization.

 

BMP has a main website (buildingmovement.org) and several project-specific sites (racetolead.org, tools2engage.org and solidarityis.org) that require regular updates. More than 70k users visit BMP’s main website and our resources and reports are downloaded more than 20k times in a year. The organization also maintains a newsletter list of roughly 15k subscribers and has a combined social media presence that reaches roughly 25k followers across Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook.  

 

This position will work closely with senior staff to implement the organization’s communications strategy. The Associate will also work closely with BMP’s Manager of Finance, Grants and Operations to support administrative functions and ensure compliance with the systems of TSNE, the fiscal sponsor of BMP.

 

This position is remote and BMP is open to hiring someone to work from anywhere in the United States. There is an expectation that the Associate will maintain working hours between 9:30AM and 5:00PM Eastern time. This position may involve two days of travel per quarter to work directly with BMP team members and other on-the-ground partners.

 

Essential Job Functions

 

The Associate, Communications and Operations will have the following responsibilities:

Communications (approximately 60%)

  • Draft, design and disseminate a wide range of communications to inform and influence the nonprofit sector, including: monthly newsletters, and other critical communication to BMP’s growing list of nonprofit staff and leaders, consultants and capacity builders, and funders, and; social media posts that draw attention to the organization’s work and thought leadership, amplify key messages of partner organization, and demonstrate solidarity in action with progressive social movements;
  • Ensure that BMP’s websites are current and properly functioning. Generate new content and design pages to promote BMP’s reports and resources. Monitor website performance, and engage with consultants to trouble-shoot any technical problems with design or functionality;
  • Track metrics related to continuously measure – and improve – BMP’s communications efforts, including: BMP’s database of contacts, earned media (i.e. quotes and mentions in news articles, partner blogs, etc.), speaking engagements, trainings and presentations by BMP staff, website traffic, engagement with social media platforms, etc;
  • Support effective communication within the organization, including: scheduling and note-taking during a range of meetings (all-staff, communications team, etc.);
  • Monitor and respond to emails sent to the info@buildingmovement.org account;
  • Additional responsibilities in this area may be added over time.

Operations (approximately 40%)

  • Support the Finance, Grants and Operations manager in processing staff reimbursements and consultant/vendor invoices, as well as data management and systems support, etc;
  • Support BMP colleagues with tech account setup and management to ensure adherence to and understanding of systems and norms used in remote work;
  • Support the Co-Executive Directors and other Senior Directors by scheduling meetings, organizing files, monitoring email communication and project timelines, etc;
  • Support day-to-day work of BMP colleagues by ordering office supplies, handling office space issues, and providing light IT support with requests that can be handled in-house or liaising with the tech support provider on retainer;
  • Event/travel planning and logistics for meetings and convenings, as needed.

Qualifications

We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

  • Two years of relevant work experience in the nonprofit sector is preferred;
  • Meticulous organizational skills, including attention to detail, ability to manage multiple priorities and a wide range of tasks simultaneously, and interest in both designing and executing detailed plans that ensure excellent implementation;
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, as demonstrated by professional writing to communicate with internal and external audiences, knowledge of and experience with online networks (including but not limited to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.), along with basic proof-reading and telephone communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well with multiple colleagues having differing work styles, courteousness and a customer-service orientation;
  • The ability to maintain a professional work style when under pressure;
  • Self-management skills, as demonstrated by follow-through and initiative, motivation to meet deadlines, and the ability to work independently;
  • Clear alignment with organizational mission and strong interest in gaining experience working in a social justice-oriented nonprofit;
  • Experience using project management and/or productivity tools like Notion, Asana, Microsoft 365, etc. is preferred.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to:

  • Potentially travel two days per quarter to work directly with BMP team members and other on-the-ground partners;
  • Handle, or feel objects, tools or controls;
  • Reach; traverse; sit (usually for longer periods of time); occasionally ascend/descend; and position self (to) move;
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds;
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate;
  • Job is not subject to significant occupational or environmental hazards;
  • Likelihood of personal injury would be relatively slight;
  • Environmental and work hazards are not present to a measurable degree.

Regarding COVID-19: TSNE considers the health and safety of our employees of the utmost importance, and due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and subject to your state and local laws, our policy requires that all employees performing in-person work at a TSNE designated office are fully vaccinated. For the purpose of this policy, fully vaccinated indicates that you have received a single dose of the Janssen vaccine, or both doses of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. Certain exemptions may be requested and will be considered by Human Resources.

 

Compensation and Benefits

 

Location: This position is remote and BMP is open to hiring someone to work from anywhere in the United States. There is an expectation that the Associate will maintain working hours between 9:30AM and 5:00PM Eastern time. 

Compensation: The starting salary for this position is $50,000.00 - $65,000.00/yr and is commensurate with experience.
