Overview

Community Boat Building’s (https://www.communityboatbuilding.org/) mission is to serve Boston’s low-income students by bringing real world experience and academic skills together to stimulate excitement for learning among low-income students in Boston Public Schools through boat building and coastal experiences. Community Boat Building is a fiscally sponsored project of TSNE.

 

Our summer program supports that mission by opening CBB programming to other constituencies. CBB’s summer programs are open to all students aged 7-14 on a fee-for-service basis. Participants sign up for one-week experiences during the day that include a wooden boat building project, rowing on Fort Point Channel, and outdoor games. CBB plans to host 4 weeks of programming in the summer of 2022. Community Boat Building is a fiscally sponsored organization of TSNE (www.tsne.org). 

Responsibilities

The Summer Program Assistant position is a full-time, temporary role responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of summer programs for youth at CBB’s shop in Boston’s Seaport District.

 

Main responsibilities include:

  • Guiding participants through their building projects;
  • Instructing on-the-water rowing; and
  • Supervising outdoor play.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Coordinate and report to Summer Program Director;
  • Welcome and orient participants on arrival;
  • Guide building activities requiring carpentry skills, using hand tools and shop resources;
  • Ensure participant safety at all times – in the shop, on the water, and on the playground;
  • Deliver fun, engaging, and educational activities for youth varying in age and experience;
  • In concert with rest of CBB staff, help ensure space is clean and safe, tools are maintained, items are organized, and layout is conducive to learning and working;
  • Foster an innovative and supportive learning environment for all CBB students and staff.

Other Details

  • The time frame for this position is July 11 through August 5 (4 weeks);
  • Daily schedule: 9am – 5pm

Qualifications

We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

  • High School diploma or GED;
  • Interest/experience in making things by hand;
  • On-water experience a plus.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to:

  • Handle, or feel objects, tools or controls;
  • Reach; traverse; sit (usually for longer periods of time); occasionally ascend/descend; and position self (to) move;
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds;
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate;
  • Job is not subject to significant occupational or environmental hazards;
  • Likelihood of personal injury would be relatively slight;
  • Environmental and work hazards are not present to a measurable degree.

Regarding COVID-19: TSNE considers the health and safety of our employees of the utmost importance, and due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and subject to your state and local laws, our policy requires that all employees performing in-person work at a TSNE designated office are fully vaccinated. For the purpose of this policy, fully vaccinated indicates that you have received a single dose of the Janssen vaccine, or both doses of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. Compensation and Benefits

 

Location: Work will be primarily performed on-site at 21 Liberty Drive, Boston, MA 

Compensation: The hourly rate for this position is $15.00.

Benefits: This position is is not eligible for benefits.
