Overview

Future Chefs (futurechefs.net) prepares Boston high school students to leave high school ready for quality employment and post-secondary education. With a focus on positive youth development, Future Chefs provides culinary training and authentic work-based learning to prepare teens with the hard skills they will need to succeed in the culinary industry, and most importantly the job readiness skills to succeed in any field.

Future Chefs’ model is based on the belief that every student is unique and flourishes in respectful, safe, stimulating settings that provide opportunities for growth, and relationships with caring, supportive adults who honor students’ lived experiences. Future Chefs occupies 5770 square feet of meeting, kitchen and office space on the first floor of The Clarion in Roxbury and is programming our space to build community-based collaborations that directly and indirectly support our mission.

 

Members of the Program Team at Future Chefs provide coaching and planning support for individuals and groups of students throughout all phases of their Future Chefs’ engagement. The Student Support Services Team works in partnership with Culinary Instructors to ensure that participants develop essential employment and life skills for a successful life after high school. The team supports students to create and implement their post-secondary plans while paying particular attention to students’ social-emotional health and well-being. During our Summer Employment Program, the Student Services Team assists students in refining and applying their essential skills, while working in summer lunches production and student lead Social Enterprise Initiative.

 

Future Chefs is a fiscally sponsored organization of TSNE (tsne.org).

Responsibilities

As a member of the Program Team, the Summer Youth Coordinator will champion the lenses of Work-Based learning and Positive Youth Development in our program design. All work at Future Chefs is performed within a Racial Justice framework to ensure that our practice and program advance the goals of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Meeting regularly with Culinary Instructors and Youth Employees, the Summer Youth Coordinator serves as a liaison providing youth employees with feedback and support on skills development to successfully work as a team member of a professional production operation.

You are a youth-serving professional committed to working in a youth-centric organization to deliver quality positive youth development programming in a culinary environment. You have direct experience in work-based learning for high school-aged young people. You have worked directly with urban teens and young adults and demonstrated high expectations for them. You are genuinely passionate about young people’s progress and wish to help them develop and share their voice, build healthy relationships, and develop the skills to succeed in life and work. You are highly organized, dependable, growth mindset oriented, and a proactive team player motivated by new challenges and a fast-paced work environment. You can practice patience and model professionalism, optimism, and integrity with young people. You can also ally with their efforts at self-determination as they pursue their interests and develop their talents. You love food and food-related activities and seek to create a joyful and stimulating space for young people to explore their interest in cooking with a purpose.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible with the Program Director, the Program Specialist, and the Culinary Lead for implementing youth summer programming:
    • Support Specialists in the recruitment of youth participants for summer employment;
    • Support onboarding and orientation of summer participants;
    • The Culinary Lead Manager is responsible for the daily management of the program schedule;
    • Monitor youth attendance, coordinate activities, verify timesheets, adjust program schedules as needed, pick, and manage check distribution;
    • Immediately report concerns regarding youth participants to Program Director, Program Specialist, and Culinary Lead Manager;
    • Coach a caseload of youth participants;
    • Assist in the design and delivery of essential skills training and workshops;
    • Apply Positive Youth Development practices;
    • Serve as point person for the team and community-building activities;
    • With the Culinary team, support youth in the management of Social Enterprise initiatives;
    • Plan and deliver summer elective class materials and document class outcomes;
    • Ensure that data related to outcomes measurement is collected and entered on schedule;
    • Maintain regular student and program evaluation efforts, including data collection, data input, and data analysis alongside program staff;
    • Organize and lead local field trips;
    • Additional duties as requested.
  • Organizational:
    • Support the organization's commitment to DEI work;
    • Support the organization’s fundraising efforts.

Qualifications

We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

  • Minimum of 1year of experience in Positive Youth Development and Family Engagements;
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in mentoring and coaching high school students;
  • Ability to establish appropriate mentoring/coaching relationships with high school students;
  • Comfortable with public speaking and group facilitation;
  • Ability to engage with all stake-holders; community partners, parents, and board members;
  • Ability to inspire young people to get excited about working outside their comfort zone and engage in new experiences;
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills;
  • Experience and/or strong interest in working with ethnically diverse teens and young adults from low-income communities;
  • Capacity to think and act intentionally and strategically to develop young people and help make positive shifts in attitudes and behavior;
  • Commitment to addressing issues related to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  • The desire to be part of a diverse learning community;
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a productive team;
  • Flexibility and a positive, can-do attitude;
  • Ability to incorporate feedback;
  • Respect for the dignity of all work and willingness to consider multiple points of view;
  • Operates with personal and professional integrity to be a positive role model for young people

Special Job Requirements

  • Ability to work a flexible part-time schedule that includes some evening and weekend hours during the school year and mandatory summer program participation;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, good driving record, and an ability to drive the company van;
  • CORI check and driving record check required.

Regarding COVID-19: TSNE considers the health and safety of our employees of the utmost importance, and due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and subject to your state and local laws, our policy requires that all employees performing in-person work at a TSNE designated office are fully vaccinated. For the purpose of this policy, fully vaccinated indicates that you have received a single dose of the Janssen vaccine, or both doses of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. Certain exemptions may be requested and will be considered by Human Resources.

 

Compensation and Benefits

 

Location: Work will be primarily performed at Future Chefs, Roxbury, MA.

Compensation: The hourly rate for this position is $20.00.  Full-Time Temporary Position.

Benefits: This position is not eligible for benefits.
