The Network for Public Health Law (, with the support of its fiscal sponsor, TSNE (, is a national organization providing leadership, legal technical assistance, and educational resources to help public health practitioners, attorneys, policymakers, researchers, advocates, and communities develop, implement, and enforce laws to solve public health challenges.


The Network is seeking a Public Health Legal Fellow to work with its Mid-States Region Office in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This position will assist the Network’s Mid-States Region in providing legal technical assistance, conducting training, and developing tools and educational materials on a wide variety of public health law topics. The Legal Fellow will primarily focus on legal issues regarding public health authority, social determinants of health, health equity, and collecting, sharing, and protecting data for public health purposes. Much of the Mid-States Region’s work is focused on public health data and privacy issues; thus, the Fellow will have an opportunity to develop expertise and contribute to the Region’s work in this area. We hope to provide a wide range of projects and opportunities that will build the Fellow’s knowledge of public health law and foster connections in the field. 


Specific responsibilities may include:


Legal Technical Assistance

  • Provide timely, high-quality, practical, and relevant technical assistance and training in multiple areas of public health law, including referrals in consultation with Network colleagues;
  • Contribute to a comprehensive repository of legal information (Legal Assistance Library).

Resource Development

  • Develop practical or scholarly Network resources for public health practitioners, attorneys, policy advocates, and other interested persons.

 Outreach and Relationship-Building

  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with public health and legal experts in the Mid-States region and areas of subject matter expertise;
  • Represent the Network at conferences and gatherings;
  • Deliver in-person or virtual public health law presentations.

We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

  • Recent law school graduate with 0-3 years of post-law school experience and a strong interest in public health law;
  • Admission to the Bar of a U.S. jurisdiction, preferred;
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and public speaking skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Demonstrated commitment to health equity and social justice;
  • Ability to create and maintain collaborative relationships with a wide variety of individuals and communities.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to:

Compensation and Benefits


Location: Work will be primarily performed in the Mid-States Region office is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but a remote work location will be considered.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position is $60,000.00/yr and is commensurate with experience.

Term: The start date is flexible, but we hope to have a Fellow begin between September 2021 and January 2022. The fellowship is for a one-year term with potential for renewal for a second year.
