BMP concentrates on the following three main areas to accomplish our goals and advance social change:

  • Leadership: Analyzing how organizations can do their best work, encourage diverse leaders at every level, and promote the most effective and inclusive practices;
  • Movement Building: Acknowledging and building on the distinct role of nonprofit organizations in advancing movements for social change;
  • Service and Social Change: Developing the capacity of organizations to engage constituents in changing the systems that impact their lives.

The Building Movement Project (BMP) is looking for a Senior Research Manager to work on our national projects focused on nonprofit infrastructure and leadership (including our 2022 Race to Lead survey and resulting reports), and movement building (including interviews of leaders of movement supporting organizations). In addition, the Senior Research Manager will provide occasional research support to the full range of BMP’s work, including service and social change (Tools to Engage), SolidarityIS, and our place-based projects in Detroit and New Mexico.  The Senior Research Manager will work closely with BMP’s Co-Directors and senior staff members, and will supervise the Research Analyst.


BMP has staff spread across seven states and offices in New York and Detroit, and is open to hiring someone to work remotely from anywhere in the United States. Once it is safe to travel, this position may require occasional travel up to four days a month (on average) to attend conferences and trainings, and to work directly with BMP team members and other on-the-ground partners.


As the Senior Research Manager, you will:

  • Conduct and supervise quantitative data analysis and qualitative research methods; including producing data visualizations that help make meaning of findings;
  • Lead multiple research projects to inform nonprofit organizations and the sector on ideas that matter and challenge the status quo;
  • Collaborate on the development of surveys, interview protocols, and other data collection tools that uncover critical insights and experiences;
  • Share the findings of BMP’s research by writing reports, memos, articles and blogs, as well as presenting, training, and sharing the findings in a variety of venues;
  • Supervise the Research Analyst and work closely with BMP’s Co-Directors and other staff;
  • Contribute thought leadership and strategic insights to the development of future research projects.

  • You are curious and like working with a team. You have experience managing other researchers and enabling continuous learning of team members. You are comfortable with discussions that challenge assumptions.
  • You have a drive for excellence and impact. You strive to be ahead of the curve and enjoy staying up to date on methods/platforms/systems for collecting, analyzing and communicating quantitative and qualitative data.

Compensation and Benefits


Location: Work will be primarily performed remotely from your home.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position is $95,000.00 - $115,000.00/ year and is commensurate with experience.
