Overview

FRESH New London (freshnewlondon.org) is a small, food- and racial justice-oriented non-profit located in New London, CT. Our goal is to unlock the power of New London’s diverse community and encourage broad participation in the hands-on transformation of our food system from what it is to what it ought to be: healthy, just, sustainable, accessible, productive, and beautiful! 

 

FRESH New London is fiscally sponsored by TSNE (tsne.org).

Responsibilities

The Food Justice Educator (FFJE) will work directly with young people to grow food and guide them to discover the direct connection between the food system and social justice. This person is will engage youth and other community members in the “how and why” of FRESH’s mission and work with a team to carry out positive food system change projects around New London.  The Food Justice Educator will also assist in maintaining the FRESH Urban Farm and Education Center, work with youth to get FRESH food out to the community, will conduct workshops to ground our work in social and racial justice and may also work with people of all ages to teach and promote food justice.  

 

Essential Functions

  • Co-plan and co-facilitate seasonal Youth Crew Programs with other Food Justice Educator & Junior Staff (youth staff) that teach young people about food justice -from goal setting to recruitment to daily;
  • Supervise Crew Leaders;
  • In partnership with the Crew Leaders, work with youth staff. Oversee, guide and train Junior Staff to build leadership skills and engage them in facilitating youth crew activities;
  • Grow food with FRESH youth and the Farm Manager, from seed to sale, in order to teach basic gardening skills and get food out to the community;
  • Assist to facilitate farm based community education and volunteer engagement for all ages with the FRESH team;
  • Participate in FRESH staff meetings and events as a part of the team;
  • Represent FRESH at local, regional and statewide meetings as needed.

  • Knowledge about, experience with and a passion for vegetable gardening and food justice;
  • A deep commitment to working with young people with respect and appreciation. Values youth power;
  • An understanding of different teaching methods and learning styles – popular education and hand on learning are most valued;
  • Lots of energy and brings fun to the job;
  • A demonstrated interest in the core mission and vision of FRESH New London and a strong desire to grow in knowledge and experience in these areas;
  • Desire and ability to work in collaborative environment, and to work with supervision;
  • Strong communication skills.  Must communicate often and thoughtfully, through email, Google Docs and text;  
  • Experience with fresh, whole foods cooking (preferred) and an appreciation for food traditions of many cultures;
  • A flexible schedule - after school and evening hours, Saturday mornings and other flexible hours required;
  • Valid CT Driver’s License/ clean driving record;
  • Willing and able to drive pick up truck;
  • Is responsible, flexible and self-motivated;
  • Ready to work hard with a team of dedicated people;
  • Is Committed to working against racism and other forms of discrimination;
  • Familiar with or willing to learn about New London;
  • Willing to work in both office and outdoor/ agricultural settings, including physical agricultural work;
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish and English preferred).

Special Requirements

  • Evening and weekend hours, flexibility required;
  • Must live in or near New London, Connecticut;
  • Current driver’s license;
  • Comfortable driving trucks;
  • Driver's license check and clean driving record;
  • Background check.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to:

  • Work in urban farm, greenhouse, outdoor classroom and office;

  • Reach; traverse; sit (usually for longer periods of time); occasionally ascend/descend; and position self (to) move;
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds;
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate;
  • Job is not subject to significant occupational or environmental hazards;
  • Likelihood of personal injury would be relatively slight;
  • Environmental and work hazards are not present to a measurable degree.

Compensation and Benefits

 

Location: Work will be primarily performed FRESH located in New London, CT. Work is not eligible for remote work

Compensation: The houly rate for this position is $17.50/hr.
