Responsibilities

The Assistant Controller manages the general accounting operations of approximately 55 Nonprofit Organizations in collaboration with the accounting team. This position reviews, analyzes and audits accounting transactions, reports and forecasts for validity, as well as troubleshooting. This position will also play a key role in the budgeting and reporting of internal programs.

 

Compliance

  • Review and approve adjusting entries proposed by staff, ensure proper documentation and the validity of entry;
  • Complete account reconciliation on the general ledger;
  • Perform monthly, quarterly and annual review on various balance sheet and income statement accounts.

General Accounting

  • Take the lead on researching and preparing adjusting journal entries;
  • Maintain the Depreciation and Investment schedule in conjunction with the Senior Accountant.

Reporting

  • Help with state registration reporting;
  • Coordinate financial audits with the Controller;
  • Help prepare documentation and back up for the annual audit;
  • Help to create and maintain financial reports.

Research & Education

  • Be a resource to staff on technical accounting issues;
  • Research and present accounting topics to internal staff;
  • Draft procedure and financial policy as well as accounting guidance;
  • Respond to inquiries related to depreciation and capitalization;
  • Help to create and maintain training materials.

Internal Financial Support

  • Help develop and distribute budget timeline and template for internal departments, ensuring that all budget managers follow the approved timeline; providing financials, payroll, and other relevant information as needed; collating all budgets together for CFO and Finance Committee review and Board approval;
  • Ensure that automatic monthly reports are sent to all internal budget managers, updating as needed and reviewing with managers when necessary;
  • Work with department manager to provide financial inputs on relevant business decisions;
  • Review and approve internal expense and revenue contracts.

Special Projects

  • Support the implementation and updates of new accounting related software.

 

Complete other tasks and projects related to the job, as needed.

Qualifications

We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

  • Minimum seven years of progressive accounting experience with an understanding of all types of accounting transactions;
  • BA/BS degree in accounting or business, or equivalent experience required;
  • Strong knowledge of all nonprofit functional accounting areas required;
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Ability to research and troubleshoot problems;
  • Experience creating financial reports, Intacct experience desired;
  • Federal Uniform Guidance knowledge desired;
  • Demonstrated track record proactively researching and resolving accounting inconsistencies;
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Office;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to function independently and work as part of a team;
  • Commitment to the work of social and economic justice organizations;
  • Ability to work effectively with people of different cultural backgrounds;
  • Experience training a plus.
