  • Overview

    Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition (MFFC) (www.mattapanfoodandfit.org) grew out of an effort to draw on the wonderful ethnic and cultural diversity of the Mattapan community to promote a healthy living environment, with a focus on access to healthy foods and the promotion of physical fitness for all ages. Positive changes in these areas complement other efforts to decrease health problems like diabetes, heart disease, obesity and other health conditions that plague our community.

     

    Mission Statement: MFFC promotes health and healthy behaviors by improving the nutritional and physical activity environments for Mattapan by bringing health and wellness options for residents.


    Vision Statement: Mattapan will become known as one of the healthiest communities in Boston, with easy access to affordable and healthy food. Our streets will be clean, safe, walk-able, and bike-able. Our residents of all ages and abilities will take regular advantage of the abundant and inviting play spaces and recreational opportunities.

     

    Vigorous Youth Mission Statement: To support MFFC’s vision and mission through bike education and advocacy, food access programming, and personal and self-development workshops.


    The Youth Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating programs for our Vigorous Youth in coordination with the Executive Director. Vigorous Youth are youth in the community aged 14-19 that have an interest in the Mattapan community and want to make a meaningful impact. Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition is a fiscally sponsored project of TSNE MissionWorks (www.tsne.org).

    Responsibilities

    General

    • Maintain a safe environment for our Vigorous Youth in all spaces;
    • Design annual schedule according to mission and vision;
    • Create youth work experience in partnership with the Vigorous Youth Peer Leader, particularly on Saturdays;
    • Supervise 8-12 youth ages 14-19;
    • Attend monthly MFFC meetings.

    Budgeting and Reporting

    • Manage the youth program budget;
    • Keep track of youth hours and prepare invoices;
    • Provide monthly reports;

    Programs

    • Work with MFFC members on the following activities: Mattapan on Wheels, Mobile Farm Stand, Fitness Fridays, gardening, and etc;
    • Assist youth with the collection and evaluation of data from surveys collected during MFFC activities;
    • Empower youth to think creatively, take initiative, and complete new projects;

    Marketing

    • Update MFFC Vigorous Youth social media in partnership with the VY Peer Leader;
    • Assist with the advertising and recruitment of Vigorous Youth;

    Relationship Building

    • Build and maintain relationships with existing MFFC partners and other youth serving organizations;
    • Other related duties as needed.

    Special Requirements

    • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including some Saturdays and evenings;
    • Please note, MFFC is an active organization, the person in this role will be participating in physical activity (i.e biking, gardening, farming, walking, etc).

     

    Qualifications

    We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

    • Two to four years of experience working with teens and/or a Bachelor’s degree with 1-2 year’s experience;
    • Experience working with youth of color;
    • Able to work independently and collaboratively with diverse groups of people;
    • Comfort with grassroots community organizing, including door knocking, conducting 1 on 1 conversations and follow up with individuals;
    • Must possess strong organizational skills;
    • Passion for making a difference in the Mattapan community and young people’s lives;
    • Able to commit to length of employment;
    • Strong oral, written, and communication/presentation skills;
    • Must be enthusiastic;
    • Able to use PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Constant Contact;
    • Experience working in food systems preferred;
    • Ability to create daily schedules in 15-minute incrementspreferred;
    • Ability and/open to learn how to devise a strategic plan;
    • Bilingual in Haitian Creole and/or Spanish preferred;
    • Able to ride a bike.
