  • Overview

    Uprooted & Rising is a new movement to end higher education’s support for Big Food and white supremacy in the food system and direct our generation’s energy towards food sovereignty. We are currently supporting several campaigns to expose and oppose Big Food on college campuses across the United States. Uprooted & Rising is also a leader of the Real Meals Campaign, calling out cafeteria contractors Aramark, Sodexo and Compass Group for their ties to big food and demanding access to campuses for community producers, particularly producers of color.


    Real Food Generation, whose mission is to harness the power of youth and universities for a just and sustainable food system, is the organizational home of Uprooted & Rising, and is in turn a fiscally sponsored program of TSNE MissionWorks.



    Uprooted & Rising is looking for an organizer to join a fierce, smart team as we mobilize to fundamentally challenge white supremacy and corporate control in our food system and build a movement for food sovereignty.


    Position Overview


    The Core Team Organizer (CTOs) Program is a 3-12 month opportunity for leaders in Uprooted & Rising to focus substantial time to progressing the movement through deep project-based work at the national or regional level and to gain experience as part-time staff in a movement organization. Each CTO will be assigned a unique project or set of projects. CTOs take initiative, problem-solve on the fly and work with a diverse, geographically dispersed team.


    The Southern Organizer will be responsible for spreading the word about Uprooted & Rising and the Real Meals Campaign across the South, particularly at HBCUs, and for orienting and training new groups to the movement. They will support existing groups to develop locally and escalate their campaigns. They will support groups to do community building and connect with food sovereignty initiatives.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Develop and support 3-6 local groups in the South;
    • Recruit for and help organize local workshops and trainings;
    • Advise groups on their campaigns;
    • Develop and relationships with other organizations in the region;

    • A commitment to economic justice, fighting racism, fighting the patriarchy, student power and youth power.
    • A passion for food justice and a clear personal stake in transforming the food system and higher education’s role in the food system;
    • 6 months + involvement in Uprooted & Rising as a leader
    • 2+ years’ experience organizing and winning campaigns and building momentum;
    • 1+ years’ experience leading nonviolent direct actions;
    • 1+ years’ experience developing the leadership of others (including supervisory or mentorship experience);
    • Familiarity with food and farming issues in the South, particularly the challenges and opportunities facing producers of color
    • In-depth understanding of college and university power structures and decision-making processes, on-campus student activism and student group dynamics; experience working with, college-based student activists;
    • Experience leading or training diverse groups of students or other youth;
    • Strong writing and public speaking skills;
    • Excellent ability to build strong working relationships; ability to build new relationships through networking;
    • Strong self-motivation, a “hunger” for campaign success and an eagerness to be challenged;
    • Experience with Momentum-based movement-building a plus (Cosecha, IfNotNow, Black Lives Matter, AllOfUs, Sunrise);
    • Able to drive and access a valid driver’s license.

    Normal workweek is 14-18 hours, with occasional weekend and evening work.


    This job runs from December 2019 through December 2020 and pays $15/hour. The typical travel for road trips and trainings, national events, and retreats every 1-3 months.
