  • Overview

    Real Food Generation, whose mission is to harness the power of youth and universities for a just and sustainable food system, is the organizational home of Uprooted & Rising, and is in turn a fiscally sponsored program of TSNE MissionWorks.    

     

    Uprooted & Rising is a new movement to end higher education’s support for Big Food and white supremacy in the food system and direct our generation’s energy towards food sovereignty. We are currently supporting several campaigns to expose and oppose Big Food on college campuses across the United States. Uprooted & Rising is also a leader of the Real Meals Campaign, calling out cafeteria contractors Aramark, Sodexo and Compass Group for their ties to big food and demanding access to campuses for community producers, particularly producers of color.

    Responsibilities

    Uprooted & Rising is looking for an Organizer to join a fierce, smart team as we mobilize to fundamentally challenge white supremacy and corporate control in our food system and build a movement for food sovereignty.

     

    The Training Core Team Organizer (CTO) Program is a 3-12 month opportunity for leaders in Uprooted & Rising to focus substantial time to progressing the movement through deep project-based work at the national or regional level and to gain experience as part-time staff in a movement organization. Each CTO will be assigned a unique project or set of projects. CTOs take initiative, problem-solve on the fly and work with a diverse, geographically dispersed team.

     

    The CTO works with RFG's Director of Programs and the Training Core team members to develop training resources and curriculum, support local and virtual trainings, facilitate workshops, and co-lead the network of trainers for Uprooted & Rising. 

     

    Essential Job Functions

    Qualifications

    We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.                      

    •  A commitment to economic justice, racial justice, student power and youth power; 
    • A passion for food justice and a clear personal stake in transforming the food system and higher ed’s role in the food system;
    • 6 months + involvement in Uprooted & Rising as a leader or trainer;
    • 1+  year of experience with popular education, curriculum design and resource development;
    • 2+ years of involvement with organizing, taking action, and building power;
    • 1+ years’ experience leading groups and developing the leadership of others (including mentorship experience);
    • In-depth understanding of on-campus student activism and student group dynamics;
    • Experience working with community-based groups;
    • Experience leading or training diverse groups;
    • Strong writing and public speaking skills;
    • Strong time management and project management skills;
    • Strong self-motivation, an eagerness to be challenged and to learn;
    • Experience with Momentum-based movement-building a plus (Cosecha, IfNotNow, Black Lives Matter, Sunrise);
    • Able and willing to work some nights and weekends and to travel nationally.

    Special Requirements

    This job is 8-10 hours in a typical week and pays $15/hour and is available through June 2020. It requires occasional weekend and evening work, including travel for road trips and trainings, national events, and retreats every 1-3 months.
