We equip health and human services organizations with problem-solving strategies to prevent a person's unmet economic or environmental needs from developing into legal – and health – crises. By providing robust group training and individual technical assistance to their teams, we equip our partners with the information, skills, and tools they need to link the people they serve with health-promoting benefits, services, and legal protections.  

     

    Responsibilities

    MLPB Legal Advisors are legal generalists responsible for supporting workforces across many domains of public interest law.  MLPB’s "train-the-trainer" model is complementary to, but distinct from, more familiar (and essential) access to justice approaches such as direct legal representation of individual clients. (NOTE: Because MLPB and its staff do not provide direct legal representation to individuals, families, or classes of consumers, applicants seeking to practice law in this important way should not apply for this position.)

     

    The Legal Advisor we recruit will join a passionate, talented team and advance MLPB’s mission and successful growth by anchoring an innovative, state-wide partnership with Healthy Families Massachusetts (HFM) – an intensive, evidence-based family support and parent coaching program for first-time parents during pregnancy and the first three years of a child’s life.

     

    This position and its primary responsibilities will tap legal skills, project management skills, and social work skills, including but not limited to:

     

    Legal problem-solving

    • Joining interdisciplinary team meetings across the state to strategize about how legal risks, rights and remedies influence people's unmet health-related social needs (HRSN)
    • Responding thoughtfully, efficiently, and creatively to a high volume of questions from workforce colleagues (“HRSN first responders”) both within and outside team meetings

    Training

    • Developing and delivering in-person and web-based trainings that teach workforces about (a) how law, public policy, and history (social dimensions of health a/k/a SDOH) impact people’s health and well-being and (b) common obstacles and ways to overcome them when trying to access services, benefits and other supports for which people are legally eligible

    Quality Assurance and Improvement

    • Maintaining timely documentation of all activities on central case management database
    • Preparing regular reports on services and outcomes, identifying trends in consumer- and population-level needs
    • Contributing to research and evaluation activities, including efforts to demonstrate how MLPB’s work promotes the Strengthening FamiliesTM protective factors and advances the Quadruple Aim
    • Identifying stories that illustrate gaps in the “safety net” through which people fall despite best efforts to leverage existing resources
    • Supervising interns
    • Miscellaneous / general non-profit “pitching in”

    Qualifications

    We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

     

    Key Qualifications

    • JD required (licensed and in good standing in Massachusetts)
    • At least 3 years of professionally relevant experience required
    • Additional MSW preferred (or training/experience in community health, social work, or public health)
