    The General Counsel directs and oversees the legal department and is responsible for all aspects of legal affairs for TSNE MissionWorks (TSNE MW). S/he provides legal counsel to TSNE MW’s leadership, and thought partnership on all legal questions and issues that affect the business operations of TSNE MW. S/he is also the lead advisor on policy issues impacting the organization and the sector, and is responsible for ensuring TSNE MW’s ongoing risk management.

    • Provide legal advice on all matters related to TSNE MW’s governance, business structure, operations, and strategy;
    • Serve as the primary legal advisor to TSNE MW’s CEO, Board, senior staff, and fiscally sponsored organizations;
    • Provide legal research, analysis, service and guidance for TSNE;
    • Responsible for the development and review of all legal documents pertaining to the operation of TSNE MW’s business, including employment-related documents;
    • Develop, oversee and manage all aspects of TSNE MW’s risk management; review, draft, and update organizational policies and guidance related to risk management;
    • Develop, oversee, and ensure TSNE MW’s regulatory, contract, and compliance policies and processes are updated and implemented, including regulatory compliance, employment and labor law issues, regulations and restrictions pertaining to tax-exempt status, fundraising law, trademark practices, and intellectual property protection;
    • Serve as the lead negotiator and manage all TSNE MW legal matters including incident management and investigations;
    • Monitor and manage any litigation, including responding to subpoenas and working with outside counsel;
    • Manage, evaluate, and maintain relationships with external attorneys and legal firms; ensure any outsourced legal need;
    • In partnership with internal departments and fiscally sponsored organizations, identify, prioritize, plan and implement risk management projects and strategies;
    • In collaboration with CFO, review, negotiate and oversee approvals of new and renewed insurance policies;
    • Chair TSNE MW’s Institutional Review Board;
    • Manage IP portfolio, and advise TSNE MW and fiscally sponsored organizations on Intellectual Property issues;
    • Advise on permissibility of advocacy practices; advocate and lobby as required;
    • Serve as TSNE MW’s lead resource on public policy and policies impacting the nonprofit sector, and advise on potential impact(s) of ongoing policy development and changes;
    • Represent TSNE MW externally as required;
    • Other tasks as required.


    We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.


    • Law degree from an accredited law school with an active license to practice law in Massachusetts with a minimum of 10 years of experience in nonprofit law;
    • Familiarity with commercial contracts, governance, tax, licensing, compliance, litigation, privacy and data privacy, intellectual property, employment and labor law, human resources and insurance law, especially as it relates to nonprofits;
    • Exceptional leadership skills;
    • Prior supervisory experience;
    • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills;
    • Significant experience negotiating favorable outcomes for clients;
    • A strong belief in the TSNE MW mission;
    • Proficiency in technology, specifically with MS Office and enterprise systems.
