  • Overview

    Real Food Challenge (www.realfoodchallenge.org), a fiscally sponsored program of TSNE MissionWorks (www.tsne.org), leverages the power of youth and universities to create a fair and sustainable food system. After winning dozens of campaigns nationally that have resulted in $80 million committed to Real Food annually, we have proven that student organizing can drive substantial change in the food chain in every region of the country, at a wide variety of colleges. We believe that with a shift in strategy, we can have a radically greater impact! That’s why just this year RFC launched two initiatives: the Real Meals campaign, to change the food service management industry in coalition with farmers, ranchers, fishermen, and environmentalists; and a new movement called Uprooted and Rising, which will end college and university support for Big Food and racism in the food system, while directing the energy of our generation toward food sovereignty.


    We’re looking for an Associate Director of Operations (Associate Director) with a passion for food justice and social movements, who also has a knack for the systems that bring support and transparency to movements. The Associate Director of Operations will join the leadership team to steward and strengthen systems for finances, hiring, staff support, and internal communications. As with other RFC senior staff, the Associate Director will additionally provide some support of RFC's programs, fundraising and/or coalition work.

    • Managing human resources projects with the support of TSNE MissionWorks, including:
      • Running RFC's hiring processes in according to stated policies and practices;
      • developing and updating job descriptions;
      • Managing the onboarding of new staff;
      • Coordinating annual and three-month staff performance planning and reviews;
      • Coordinating staff-wide feedback processes;
      • Ensuring that all paperwork associated with HR is processed and submitted accurately, and in a timely manner;
      • Supporting the Managing Director with goal setting for RFC's annual plan;
      • Updating organizational policies, and running a program evaluation and tracking process twice annually;
    • Managing finances according to stated policies and practices and in coordination with RFC's Executive Director, including:
      • Managing RFC's financial tracking system;
      • Initiating and leading the planning process to develop our annual budget;
      • Managing contracts with consultants and vendors and managing MOUs with our organizational partners in collaboration wit TSNE;
      • Processing invoices and reimbursements;
    • Coordinating logistics for internal events (e.g., staff retreats) including:
      • Setting strategic dates for core team retreats and trainings;
      • Managing event budgets and expenses;
      • Reserving event spaces and managing associated logistics;
      • Coordinating staff travel;
      • Convening a logistics support team for event.
    • Other potential responsibilities include providing support organizationally on at least one programmatic area, including:
      • Real Meals Campaign: Coalition organizing, strategy and/or providing administrative support;
      • Trainings: Supporting the development of new trainers and core projects to systematize the new training program;
      • Organizational communications;
      • RFC Fundraising.

    Special Requirements

    • This position will require significant hours (40-45 per week) to be worked on a regular basis.
    • This job requires occasional weekend and evening work, including travel for national retreats, events and conferences every 1-2 months. We are based in Cambridge, MA in a building that is partially wheelchair accessible, with no on-site accessible bathroom, and our offices are on the third floor. Alternative meeting locations and/or accommodations will be considered to provide increased accessibility. Candidates residing in the Greater Boston area are strongly preferred.

    Salary and Benefits

    • $39,000-49,000  To be determined by location and experience.


    We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the qualifications and skills described below.

    • 3-5 years' experience in an operations management role in a non-profit or business;
    • 3-5 years' experience (volunteer or professional) as a leader in social justice movements;
    • 2+ years' experience with financial tracking and managing budgets;
    • 2+ years' experience with hiring and/or supervising staff;
    • Strong events planning and management skills;
    • Solid project management skills;
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
    • Understanding of dynamics of internal communications and of building a healthy organizational culture;
    • A passion for food justice;
    • A commitment to economic justice, anti-racism, and people power.
